CompactPCI-Serial – based on PICMG 2.0 Compact PCI Standard – New Gen 3.0 released since 2025

  CPCI-Serial – features and next Gen R3.0

CompactPCI® Serial is an Open Industrial Standard of Modular Computer Systems was officially adopted by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) as PICMG CPCI-S.0 CompactPCI® Serial in March 2011.

It is based on well-known PICMG 2.0 CompactPCI standard, and mechanically compatible with it, both 3U and 6U sizes for convection and conduction cooling are specified, except the using backplane and modules cards connectors. The different connectors used for CompactPCI® Serial are optimized for high-speed differential signal transmission that permit very high data rates were required because in contrast to Compact PCI based on parallel PCI bus, CompactPCI® Serial uses only serial point-to-point connections for differential pairs based protocols. Shielding and impedance control is maintained through the connectors. It offers up to 184 pin pairs on a 3U board by 6 connentors. The connector is arranged in rows with 12 pins each which are sufficient for 4 high speed signal pairs and 4 pins in a row are required for ground. However, the pins within the connector are not specialized. So, a pin can be used for signals (differential or single ended), for ground, as well as for the supply voltage. All connector types are designed for press-fit mounting. To realize rear I/O, a plug connector is pressed on to the back of the backplane. This mirrors the pin assignment from the front to the back side.

The last standard update – PICMG CPCI-S.0 R3.0 adopted in beginning of 2025 supports PCI Express Gen 4, SATA/SAS and USB 3.0 which are arranged as a simple star architecture, and 10GBASE-T or 10GBase-KX Ethernet is a full mesh or single star. The Rugged version for aerospace applications – PICMG CPCI-S.1 R1.0 – CompactPCI® Serial Space also supports Dual Star interconnect for PCI Express, Dual Star and Mesh interconnect for Ethernet, TT-Ethernet, EtherSpace, SpaceWire and CAN.

CompactPCI® Serial system can contain up to nine cards in a system – one system slot(it can be right or ether left slot) and up to 8 peripheral slots.

CompactPCI® Serial relies on a single rail +12V main power supply. +5V standby is optionally available. -48V optional voltage is available within a 6U system only. The backplane distributes the supply voltages to the front boards. Rear boards are indirectly supplied by the corresponding front board. Neither the power supply itself nor the connecting of the power supply to the backplane is a part of this specification.

Next Gen 3.0 is matter in regards to:

  • Performance Boost
  • Higher Throughput per Slot
  • Scaleability
  • Migration-Ready
  • Robustness
